RANCHI: Even as the deadline set by the civic body to clear drains ahead of monsoon nears, waterlogging continues to be a problem in various areas of city.
TOI visited several areas in the city and residents are worried that if the drains are getting clogged due to pre-monsoon showers, the situation will worsen once monsoon arrives. The residents also demanded that RMC cleans all drains in densely populated areas which experience heavy waterlogging.
Residents of Panchsheel Nagar near Ratu Road experience waterlogging every monsoon and said that they have to face problems due to overflowing of drains.
"It becomes difficult to even step out of our houses after heavy showers as overflowing drains leave behind mounds of garbage on the roads," said Preity Kumari, a resident of Panchsheel Nagar. On being asked how can garbage spill on to the road when RMC has been clearing the drains, Preity said that they aren't doing it completely which is leading to a situation like this.
Residents of Harihar Singh road in Morhabadi had the same complaints. "One can imagine the kind of cleaning exercise carried out by RMC as the roads were full of garbage when pre-monsoon showers lashed the city last week. The whole street was filled with garbage mixed in rain water on Thursday," said Akash Gupta.
RMC has set a deadline of June 5 to clear all drains in the city and they continue to hold cleaning exercise in various areas.
Additional municipal commissioner of RMC, Kunwar Singh Pahan, said: "We are carrying out the drain cleaning exercise on a priority basis and several teams are deployed to ensure that it is being done fast. We are also facing challenges in a few localities due to encroachment issues."
