The Hunter River is dropping after the State Emergency Service ordered some Denman residents to evacuate in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The SES told residents in low-lying areas of Ogilvie, Palace and Jerdan streets to evacuate at 2.30am.
But a Denman resident told the Newcastle Herald at 10am that the flood waters had started to recede.
"The water came up and peaked early this morning, but it's going back down now," he said.
"Nothing really happened."
The Bureau of Meteorology said the river had peaked at 7.96 metres at Denman about 2am but had dropped slightly to 7.82 metres by 8am.
The bureau has issued a minor flood warning for the Hunter, predicting road closures in low-lying areas in and around Scone, Aberdeen and Muswellbrook.
"Residents in the low-lying sections of Aberdeen, including McAdam, McQueen, Segenhoe, Dart, Hall, Gunderbri, Nandowra and the Willow Grove Village section of New England Highway, should continue to monitor the situation," it said.
The Roads and Traffic Authority warned of water on the New England Highway north and south of Scone.
Muswellbrook Council said Castlerock, Dorset, Mangoola, Rouchel, St Heliers, Wells Gully and Yarraman roads were closed due to flooding.
The BoM said more wet weather was on the horizon after a slight easing in rainfall across NSW.
"Another trough is expected to cross the state during Wednesday and Thursday, bringing a return of rain and unsettled conditions," the bureau said on Tuesday.
