Flood water bursts through doors of Dumfries pub "like it was wanting a pint"

Leeann Thomson said the flood water on Friday came in the doors of the Friars Vaults pub “like it was wanting a pint”.

Leeann was standing in for landlady mum Liz as warnings came in that the River Nith was about to burst its banks.

She said: “The drains outside were absolutely packed so I started trying to scrape it out with a shovel because we were getting no help from the council.

“We put the seats up onto the bar but when we tried to get back in later, they were up against the door, blocking us from getting in.

“My mum has ran this place for about 30 years and I’m just gutted for her because this keeps happening time and time again.

“It makes me so angry that she’s put in so much work to make the pub the way it is and nothing is being done to prevent this.

“With the cost of living the way it is, I’m wondering if she can afford to deal with this again. The clean-up costs are going to be madness.

“If it wasn’t for the customers that have become friends, it wouldn’t be worth it.

“Family and friends have helped with the clean-up but you just wonder how much more you can take.”
