Flood warnings issued across Scotland due to melting snow as temperatures rise

Flood warnings have been issued across Scotland as adverse weather conditions continue to batter the country.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has put 15 flood warnings in place for the majority of Scotland from today.

Recent storm surges and high winds could potentially result in treacherous conditions for coastal areas.

Gusts of up 80mph have rocked large parts of the west coast since early morning on Sunday.

Large areas of lying snow is now beginning to melt across the country as temperatures rise from the extreme lows Scotland saw earlier in the week.

Scots in areas normally at risk of flooding have been urged to take measures to prevent flood waters from damaging their property.

A spokesperson for SEPA said: “Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.

“Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.”

A yellow weather warning for high winds remains in place for large parts of the west coast until 11.59pm this evening.

It is the latest in a string of alerts for adverse weather issued across Scotland during the opening weeks of 2021.

Several inches of snow landed throughout the week as temperatures plummeted to as low as -22C as a band of severe wintry weather descended on the country.

Rain is expected to dominate the forecast for Scotland in the coming days as the milder climates continue to sneak into the country.
