Flood warning issued for parts of south Manchester today as region prepares for more thunderstorms

A flood alert has been issued for parts of south Manchester today as the region prepares for more thunderstorms.

The food warning covers parts of Fallowfield and Rusholme, including areas near Platt Fields Park and Birchfield Park.

The Environment Agency said 'flooding is expected' after river levels have risen at the Brighton Grove river gauge.

Residents and businesses around the area are being warned to take 'immediate action' and be aware of their surroundings.

Properties on Wilmslow Road are particularly at risk of flooding.

"River levels have risen at the Brighton Grove river gauge as a result of localised thunderstorms", according to the Environment Agency.

"Consequently, flooding is imminent. We believe there is a possibility of flooding for some properties off Wilmslow Road.

Further thunderstorms are forecast over the next few hours, with low confidence over exact timing and locations", the government website warns.

The alert was issued at around 10pm on Tuesday evening.

River levels are expected to peak at around 10.30pm tonight.

"We are closely monitoring the situation", the Environment Agency added.

"Our incident response staff are clearing debris screens in the area of concern. Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation."

The warning come after the region was battered by heavy downpours and spectacular displays of lightning on Tuesday.

Flash flooding also caused traffic chaos on the M60, M62 and M602.

A new yellow weather warning is in place today which warns of thunderstorms between 12pm and 9pm in Greater Manchester.

Forecasters have said to expect slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms arriving in the afternoon.

Some places will miss them, but where they do occur there will be torrential downpours.

There could be 25 to 35mm falling in an hour, while some places could see up to 50mm in a two to three hour period.
