Flood warning again this morning after last night's high tide hit at least four places in Bristol

People living and working alongside the River Avon through Bristol are being warned it may burst its banks again this morning, around 12 hours after .

The high tide is expected at around 9.45am this morning, (Tuesday, Oct 1) in Avonmouth, and a few minutes later further upstream as the sea surges in up the Avon Gorge and into the heart of the city.

The Environment Agency said it would be beefed up by a brisk northerly wind, which could blow waves over the flood defences in Pill especially.

Last night, the River Avon burst its banks in at least four locations in Bristol.

There was flooding in Pill on the Somerset side of the river, and prompted a big response from the Environment Agency and other authorities, as captured in this stunning picture (above) by Toby Foot.

What to do in a flood

The tide also over-topped the banks on the A4 Portway on the Bristol side, near Shirehampton.

The river also burst its banks at the Cumberland Basin, or Western Harbour, and along Clarence Road in Redcliffe, between the Bedminster Bridge roundabout and Temple Meads station.

This morning, the high tide is expected to be unusually high again, and a red warning - that flooding is expected - is in place for the lower parts of the Avon Gorge, from the M5 Avonmouth Bridge to Shirehampton, and particularly in Pill.

An amber flood warning, that flooding is possible, is in place for the rest of the River Avon upstream from Shirehampton, through the city centre and all the way to Hanham and Conham.

The high tide level is 8.1m - it is usually around 6m or 7m - and will peak at just before 10am.
