Flood-threatened outback town evacuees set to return

Hundreds of evacuees from a flood-threatened outback town will return home after waters receded and assessment teams gave the all-clear.

The residents can return to Daly River, about 220km southwest of Darwin, where many have been housed in a showgrounds pavilion since February 4.

The river reached a major flood-level peak above 14 metres on February 9, before slowly receding.

"Residents who were evacuated will be able to return home on Saturday 21 February following recovery efforts to restore the community to a habitable state," the Secure NT emergency alert agency said on its website on Friday.

Assessment teams in Daly River have checked that electricity, water and sewerage systems are safe and operating for residents to return.

Police who stayed in the township and carried out multiple drone surveys reported some houses had been awash in ankle-deep waters before floodwaters receded.

Disaster recovery funding jointly provided by the federal and Northern Territory governments has been made available to evacuees.
