Flood prone Cambuslang road needs action to stop another bleak winter, claims councillor

Action is needed to stop another bleak winter for Cambuslang residents affected by “appalling” flooding, it has been claimed.

Cambuslang East councillor Walter Brogan has demanded South Lanarkshire Council detail their plans to stop Gilbertfield Road flooding again in the coming months.

The road has constantly suffered problems due to bad weather in recent years.

Now Mr Brogan, along with Labour list MSP James Kelly, has written to the local authority regarding the road.

The Council told the Reformer back in August 2019 that they planned to implement a medium-term solution to the frequent flooding issues faces by residents in the area but the road flooded again over the winter of 2019/2020.

Councillor Brogan said:“Last winter, the Gibertfield area welcomed hundreds of new residents to their homes.

“But it wasn’t long before these residents were faced with major diversions in accessing them as a result of repeated flooding on the road.

“Given the amount of new development in the area, it is appalling that this issue has not been addressed before now.

“The council have a duty to ensure that local residents are not facing the bleak prospect of another winter of flooding hassle.”

Mr Kelly MSP told the Reformer : “It is embarrassing how long this issue has been ongoing, and I am hopeful that the council will have taken further action over recent months.

“However, promises were made in the past to residents and to this newspaper that a solution would be put in place. Those promises have so far gone unmet.

“People who use the road to access their homes are worried about another winter facing the regular reality of diversions and road closures due to ongoing flooding.

“It’s time the council get their act together on this issue and I intend to keep pushing them until they do so.”

South Lanarkshire Council Head of Roads and Transportation Gordon Mackay said: “In March this year, as an interim measure, we installed additional drainage infrastructure and an area of hardstanding which will allow us to quickly and safely deploy a pump in the event of flooding on Gilbertfield Road. These measures will support a rapid response if required.

"Since March we have deployed a pump to this site on one occasion and despite heavy rain Gilbertfield Road has remained open. Flood warning signs have been left in place as a precaution.

“Dundas Homes will incorporate a permanent drainage solution within their forthcoming Phase 2 housing development to address the current flooding issues on Gilbertfield Road. Planning consent is in place for the development and we are in discussions with them in respect of the details of it.”
