Flood alerts have been issued across central and southern Scotland as the country braces itself for torrential rain showers.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has warned of potential floods to impact large parts of the country over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Scots in Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and Lothians, the Borders and West Central Scotland are set to the be the most affected.

It comes after the Met Office issued a 36-hour ‘danger to life’ weather warning for heavy downpours to hit this part of Scotland from today.

Around 50mm of rain could batter some parts of the country amid the warning, which has been in place since midnight on Tuesday.

The alert for rain will lift at midday on Wednesday.

Snow could also fall during this period, with around 10cm expected to blanket some areas of higher land.

Adverse conditions are expected to have an impact on roads and public transport for much of southern and central Scotland.

Experts have also warned that some communities could become cut off due to floods on some of the roads.

SEPA has urged Scots to be ‘vigilant’ of water levels in the area amid the conditions.

A spokesperson for SEPA said: “Persistent rainfall is expected to move into southern Scotland during the early hours of Tuesday and will continue for much of the day.

“There is some uncertainty about where the heaviest rain will occur, and how much will fall as snow.

“However, flooding of low-lying land and roads is possible from small rivers and surface water, particularly in known trouble spots. There could also be disruption to travel.

Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.”

Storm Christoph has been declared by the Met Office as heavy rainfall is expected to sweep large parts of northern England today.

Officials in South Yorkshire have declared major incident in the area ahead of the storm’s imminent arrival.
