Flood alerts issued across Scotland as forecasters predict more heavy rain

Scots have been urged to remain vigilant of potential floods as forecasters predict another downpour of heavy showers across the country today.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued 14 flood alerts for the majority of the country over the course of Tuesday, August 18.

Only the north-east, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland have been spared from the risk of flooding.

Experts are warning of heavy and thundery showers over the course of the afternoon, which could see around 50mm of rain fall in just three hours in some parts of the country.

The news comes less than a week since large parts of the country woke up to 'biblical' flash flooding following a period of sustained heavy rainfall (PA)

The adverse conditions could lead to significant travel disruption and there is a flood risk to properties.

A yellow weather warning has also been issued for large parts of Scotland for rain between 1pm and 9pm on Tuesday.

Central, Tayside and Fife, Highlands, south west Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde are set to be most impacted by the conditions.

Forecasters are anticipating the rainfall to ease by the evening.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers are expected to develop on Tuesday afternoon.

“Whilst most places will miss the worst, some showers could be slow moving and there is a chance of that 20-25 mm of rain might fall in an hour with perhaps 50 mm in 3 hours.

“The showers will ease during Tuesday evening.”

The new warning comes less than a week since large parts of eastern Scotland were severely impacted by huge thunderstorms.

Areas such as Perth, Fife and Edinburgh saw ‘biblical’ floods after heavy rain fall caused chaos across the country.
