Flood alerts issued across Merseyside as torrential rain batters region

Flood alerts have been issued across Merseyside, as torrential rain continues to batter the region.

Heavy rain is expected and overnight, leading to concerns over flooding.

Two red alerts and one amber alert from the government flooding agency are currently active across the region - meaning immediate action is required.

The first red alert is for Whinney Brook and Dovers Brook at Maghull, around Hall Lane, Damfield Lane and Foxhouse Lane.

The alert says: "River levels have risen at the Dovers Bridge river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding could occur between 11:00 and 22:00 on 28/07/19, but there is some uncertainty given the unpredictable nature of the rainfall.

"Flooding is likely to impact the lowest lying properties nearest to Whinney Brook on Hall Lane, Damfield Lane, Eastway, Newlyn Avenue and Foxhouse Lane.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and move possession and valuables off the ground or to safety.

"This message will be updated this evening, 28/07/19, or as the situation changes."

The second red alert is for Whinney Brook and Dovers Brook at Maghull, between Sefton Lane and the Waste Transfer Station.

"Flooding could occur on Sefton Lane near to Dovers Bridge including the Waste Transfer Station, Garden Centre and adjacent properties.

"Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours. We expect river levels to rise until 17:00 on 28/07/19.

The amber alert is for the River Alt Kirkby river gauge.

It reads: "River levels are forecast to rise at the Kirkby river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall today and tomorrow with occasional heavy showers. Consequently, flooding could occur between now and 23:59 on 28/07/19, but there is low confidence given the unpredictable nature of the pulses of heavy rain.

"Low lying land and roads in the Plex Moss, Downholland Moss, Formby, Great Altcar, Maghull, Kirkby and Fazakerley areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Alt, Sandy Brook, Fine Janes Brook, Cheshire Lines Brook, Sudell Brook, Whinney Brook, Simonswood Brook, Croxteth Brook, Kirkby Brook and their tributaries. Peak levels may be similar to those reached June 2019."
