Flood alerts in place for River Avon at Bristol, Pill and Shirehampton

Waves are forecast to overtop sea defences at Shirehampton and Pill tonight with sea spray expected due to high spring tides.

Forecast high water is at midnight tonight (17 November) with Force 4 South Westerly wind and a second forecast high water is at 9.00am tomorrow (18 November) with a Force 6 South Westerly wind.

The Environment Agency states that flooding to roads and farmland is possible, including the tidal River Avon from Sea Mills to Conham in Bristol, and between the Avonmouth Bridge and Shirehampton Park.

Incident response staff are closing flood gates along coastal locations.

Residents are being warned to take care along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads.

Currently there are flood warnings in place on the North Devon Coast from Hartland Point to Lynmouth, as well as one on the River Avon.

The Environment Agency will be updating its alerts on Wednesday (18 November).

The Met Office is forecasting a windy and blustery day, with strong winds tonight, across the South West - with gusts in excess of 20mph in Bristol.
