Flood alerts across the North East as Storm Ciara brings heavy rain to region

Flood alerts have been put in place in parts of the North East as Storm Ciara brings heavy downpour to the region.

The Enviornment Agency have put a number of alerts and warnings in place across the UK - and parts of County Durham and Northumberland will be affected.

Alerts have been put in place for the Lower River Wear in Durham, the River Tyne in the Hexham area, the River Rede in Northumberland National Park, the upper and lower River Coquet, and for the coastal rivers in northern Northumberland.

The warning from the agency, issued at 9pm on Saturday, reads: "Flooding of properties/roads and farmland is possible.

"Areas most at risk are riverside footpaths, low lying land and roads. Further heavy rainfall is forecast through Saturday night and Sunday, rain will be particularly heavy over high ground in the Pennines and the Cheviots.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and issue any flood warnings as needed.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

The flood alerts follow the yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office for the region.

Heavy rain and winds between 50 and 70mph will impact the North East throughout the day.
