Flood alert issued in Nottinghamshire as snow and rain cause water levels on River Trent to rise

Water levels have risen in the River Trent and a warning issued that "flooding is possible" as a result of heavy rain and snowfall in the county.

A flood alert was issued on the Government's flood information service for the River Trent at Lowdham, where pictures have shown high levels of water.

The information warning states that, while flooding of properties in the area is "not forecast at the moment", low-lying land and roads are most at risk.

It comes as heavy snowfall batters the county throughout Thursday (January 14), causing roads to close following incidents and the diversion of many bus services.

Issuing the warning on Thursday morning, the flood alert system urged the public to "be prepared".

The notice says: "River levels have risen at the Lowdham river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible between 5am and 5pm today (January 14).

"Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads around the tributaries of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire, the River Greet, Potwell Dyke, Dover Beck, Cocker Beck, Thurgarton Beck and others.

"Flooding of properties is not forecast at this point. Further rainfall is forecast over the next eight hours.

"We expect river levels to remain high until January 15.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."
