Flood alert issued for Newport and warnings across south east

A flood alert has been issued for the River Usk in Newport, and will remain in place between Saturday, October 17 and Monday, October 19.

The flood warning, issued by Natural Resources Wales, covers parts of Pillgwenlly, Maindee and Liswerry, as well as other parts of the city.

A flood alert means that "flooding is possible" and that people should be prepared.

High tide in Newport is expected to reach 7.56 metres at 8:28 PM on Saturday evening. The previous high tide reached a level of 7.2 metres at 8:15am on Saturday morning.

Natural Resources Wales said that the flood warning will remain in place until Monday morning's high tide at the earliest.

There are also flood warnings, a more serious category of alert, issued elsewhere in the south east.

Flood warnings have been issued for the Wye Estuary in Chepstow and Tintern.

Unlike alerts, warnings mean that "flooding is expected" and "immediate action is required."
