Flood alert issued for large areas of Trafford and Stockport today

A flood alert has been issued for the River Mersey by the Environment Agency.

The warning covers the Middle River Mersey catchment area, with areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston at risk of flooding.

River levels have risen at the Brinksway river gauge due to heavy rainfall overnight.

The Environment Agency said river levels still remain high throughout today.

As a result, flooding of low lying land, roads and farmland could take place today.

There could also be flooding on land and roads around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks.

Environment Agency staff are currently monitoring the situation.

A statement on the website warned people living in the area to "be prepared".

It said: "River levels have risen at the Brinksway river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall overnight, river levels will remain high throughout the day.

"We are currently not expecting flood warning levels to be reached. Consequently, flooding of low lying land, roads and farmland is possible today, on Thursday, July 9.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks and their tributaries.

"Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will update if necessary."

According to the Met Office, no further rain is expected this afternoon.

However, overnight there will be a few showers at first followed by more frequent heavy downpours.
