Flood alert issued for Kilmarnock with heavy rain set to batter town

A flood alert has been issued for Kilmarnock with heavy rain forecast for the next 24 hours.

Notorious for flooding, the council has warned that Queen's Drive has the potential to flood later today.

The vital road provides access to essential shops and some of the area's major routes.

A statement on East Ayrshire Council website reads: "The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning to advise of heavy rain between 1am today, Friday, July 3 and 3am on Saturday, July 4.

"SEPA have advised that based on heavy and continuous rainfall, there is potential for flooding in Queens Drive, Kilmarnock from 11.30am today.

"The  council’s incident room within the risk management centre will be monitoring the situation from 8am this morning and we will post any updates on the website and on our social feeds.

"As matters stand, based on current forecasting, there are no other flooding warnings being reported by SEPA for East Ayrshire."

A SEPA flood alert for Ayrshire says: " A flood alert has been issued for Ayrshire and Arran.

"Heavy rain is forecast to affect the area during Friday and into Saturday morning.

"There is a risk of flooding to low lying land, roads and properties from surface water and smaller rivers.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. 

"Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188. 

"This flood alert is now in force until further notice and was sent by phone and SMS free of charge to registered customers of our Floodline direct warning service. 

"If you haven't already signed up to receive free flood messages, please call Floodline or register online at sepa.org.uk/floodingsignup.

"Your Floodline quick dial number for this area is 24200."
