Flood alert issued for Ayrshire as heavy and thundery showers head for region

A flood alert has been issued for Ayrshire with heavy rain forecast for later today.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain is in place from 1pm until 9pm this evening.

The forecaster says that "there is a chance of that 20 to 25millilitres of rain might fall in an hour with perhaps 50mm in three hours."

SEPA's flood alert says that East and South Ayrshire is at the greatest risk in the region.

The warning reads: "Heavy and thundery showers on Tuesday may cause some flooding impacts from surface water within this area. Flooding from small watercourses to low lying areas may also occur.

"The greatest risk is to the south and east of Ayrshire during Tuesday afternoon, and if the heaviest showers fall over built up areas prone to flooding, small watercourses or transport networks.

"Possible impacts could include significant travel disruption, flooding affecting properties, communities and key infrastructure. Due to the localised nature of the heaviest showers, impacts may be isolated with not all locations being affected.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.

"Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188."
