Flood alert issued across parts of Newport

A flood alert has been issued for the River Usk in Newport, and will remain in place until at least Thursday night.

The flood alert, issued by Natural Resources Wales, covers parts of Pillgwenlly, Caerleon and Maindee as well as other parts of the city.

A flood alert means that "flooding is possible" and that people should be prepared.

High tide in Newport is expected to reach 7.2 metres at 9:15pm on Wednesday evening. The previous high tide reached a level of 7.4 metres at 8:45am on Wednesday morning.

In St Julians this morning, water levels in the River Usk were visibly much higher than usual, with the river rising across its banks.

Natural Resources Wales has stated that its flood warning will remain in place "until at least Thursday's evening high tide."

There are also three other flood alerts currently in place elsewhere in Wales.

The Wye Estuary, covering the area between Chepstow and Lower Redbrook, is currently under alert. This will also remain in place until Thursday evening at the earliest.

Elsewhere, there are flood alerts in place for the Pembrokeshire coast and the north Gower coast.
