Flock of pink flamingos spotted in garden near Bristol

Ever woke up with a flock of 30 pink flamingos in your garden?

Perhaps not. Well now you can.

Although flamingos are more native to South America and Africa, a ‘flamboyance’ of the birds have arrived in Portishead.

But they are not the species found stood on one leg, flapping in the water.

These have been introduced to the town by Portishead Lions Club - as an unusual way to raise funds for charity.

The club is now offering to put the pink plastic birds in the gardens of people as a surprise, perhaps for a birthday or special anniversary.

And so far bookings are ‘flying.’

Lions Club spokesman Nick Gough said: “A lions club in another part of the country had the idea so we contacted them asking if we could use it too.

“The concept is that people can book for the flamingos to arrive in their garden for a special occasion, perhaps a birthday or an anniversary or even for a family barbecue.

“A team from the club will then go in early in the morning and put them up so they are there ready as a lovely surprise for when the person wakes up.

“We thought it was a really quirky idea and a great way to raise funds.”

The birds will stay in place for the day and it costs £30 - with every penny raised going to charity.

And if successful, the club has plans to expand the idea to perhaps bring in other characters such as unicorns.

“Bookings are flying,” said Mr Gough, “and already we’ve had a lot of interest.

“So if it continues to go well, it’s likely we will expand our collection.”
