Floating Harbour's bacteria e-coli levels fall - but users still urged to 'take extra care'

Bristol's Harbour Master says watersports are not banned from the city's Floating Harbour - but users should still 'take extra care' due to bacteria e-coli levels.

The advice was given following a story based on a notice posted on the harbour master's Twitter profile which said 'no sport or work activity involving immersion should take place'.

The warning had been given on Saturday (February 22) following test results from four days previous which showed levels of e-coli had exceeded safety levels at three of the four test areas in the harbour.

The test areas are Baltic Wharf, St Augustine's Reach, Prince Street Bridge and Redcliffe Bridge.

Tonight, Bristol Harbour Master said levels had dropped to below the 'threshold levels'.

However, water users were still recommended to take 'extra care' due to the existence of e-coli.

Heavy rainfall had been blamed for the quality of water in the harbour in the notice posted on the master's Twitter account on Saturday.

The water quality of the harbour, where bathing is strictly prohibited, is monitored throughout the year.
