Floating concert on Loch Ken proves to be a big splash hit

A traditional music concert with the audience floating on Loch Ken has turned out to be a big splash hit.

The On The Water event saw string quintet The Galloway Agreement play on dry land at Galloway Activity Centre (GAC).

And the performance went down a storm with concert-goers bobbing around offshore in kayaks, motorboats, paddle boards and canoes.

It was floating room only for the sell-out evening show – believed to be the first of its kind in south-west Scotland.

Led by Glenkens Community and Arts Trust culture and heritage manager Aidan Nicol, the concert was GCAT’s first live event since the CatStrand in over a year.

Aidan said: “From the vantage point of the stage the musicians, technicians and I could watch the multi-coloured boats paddling in for the start of the performance from across the loch.

“One of our sound technicians commented it was the most remarkable event they’d ever seen come together – and in that moment I’d have to agree.

“It felt very special to be a part of and Loch Ken with the GAC’s friendly staff to get us on the water was the perfect setting – especially for our first live GCAT event after lockdown.”

Alan Smith, the chairman of the Loch Ken Trust, attended last Thursday’s novel event.

He said: “This really was a night to remember in so many ways.

“A lovely atmosphere which was enjoyed by the soaring red kites, diving swallows as well as the audience.

“It was great to see the wide age range of attendees.

“We must do it again.”

GAC boss Richard Hermon added: “Aidan from GCAT suggested we try an event whereby all seats were floating and the band playing from terra firma.

“I thought she was completely bonkers but it was a brilliant idea and a total sell out.

“So well done to Aidan – it was a huge hit.

“Dumfries and Galloway – first in Scotland.”

The event was organised by the Glenkens Community and Arts Trust, with the support of the Loch Ken Trust and the Galloway Activity Centre, the Galloway Glens Scheme and Creative Scotland.

The hour-long performance set featured Wendy Stewart (clarsach, vocals), Ruth Morris (alto and tenor nyckelharpa), Gavin Marwick (fiddle), Stuart Macpherson (double bass) and Beth Porter (cello).
