Flintshire dog attack: Baby girl mauled by grandfather's Staffordshire Bull Terrier

A baby girl was airlifted to hospital after being mauled by her grandfather's pet dog.

The youngster was flown to Alder Hey in Liverpool where she is currently receiving treatment following the attack in Mynydd Isa, Flintshire, during which she was bitten on the head.

She was attacked by the Staffordshire Bull Terrier after "banging her finger and screaming while she was playing in a bedroom", her granddad, who does not want to be named, confirmed.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred at around 4.45pm yesterday, North Wales Live reports.

The youngster is now recovering in hospital.

Speaking outside the the property where the attack took place, her granddad said: "She is going for a scan today. She has been playing with toys at the hospital and had a Kit Kat for breakfast and she is going to need care over quite a bit of time."

The man went on to confirm that his dog, called Duke, would be put down.

"I have signed the dog over," he said. "It is going to be destroyed."

He added that he wanted to thank the emergency services for their response.

Following the incident a  North Wales Police spokesman said: "North Wales Police and the Air Ambulance were called to a property at Mynydd Isa around 4.45pm (Saturday the 31 August) following an incident involving a dog attack.

"Police are carrying out house to house enquiries in the area."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.30pm and a casualty was airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital."

Alder Hey Hospital is based in Liverpool and specialises in treating children."
