Flights have been grounded at a major US airport in the state of New Jersey after two drones were spotted flying nearby.

Inbound planes were held in the air near Newark Liberty International Airport following the sightings on Tuesday.

Aircrafts taking off were also halted as the airport, the 11th busiest in the US, was placed on lockdown.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) said it had received two reports of drone sightings from incoming flights to Newark at about 5pm (local time).

The devices were reported to have been seen at about 3,500ft above Teterboro, New Jersey.

Reports said the drones were no longer in the airspace and flights had resumed landing.

But the New York Times reported that planes headed to the airport from other cities were delayed until a backlog could be cleared.

The issue of drones impacting commercial air traffic has taken on new urgency after reports of drone sightings in the UK impacted air travel.

Gatwick Airport, London’s second busiest airport, was severely disrupted in December when drones were sighted on three consecutive days.

The chaos resulted in about 1,000 flights being cancelled or diverted and affected 140,000 passengers.
