Flights diverted to Liverpool after 'defect' at Manchester Airport

Flights have been diverted to Liverpool John Lennon Airport as repairs take place at Manchester Airport.

Repairs are ongoing to fix a pothole on one of the runways, according to reports. Planes have been diverted to Liverpool as a result, with British Airways, easyJet and KLM planes landing at the Speke-based airport today (November 10).

The M.E.N reports that Manchester Airport is: "down to single operation on (runway) 23L which means the inbound planes are having to taxi right down the runway and turn around."

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport told the M.E.N: "This morning we identified a surface defect on Runway One during one of our regular routine inspections. Safety will always be our top priority, so as a precaution, we are temporarily operating all flights from Runway Two while we urgently rectify the issue.

“This may result in some delays to both arrivals and departures, and we apologise to passengers for any inconvenience and thank them for their patience.”

A Liverpool John Lennon Airport spokesperson told the ECHO: "We were made aware that Manchester was experiencing problems associated with the runway and as a consequence three flights bound for Manchester diverted to Liverpool – a British Airways flight from Heathrow, an easyJet flight from Palma Majorca and a KLM flight from Amsterdam."
