Flights at Liverpool Airport not affected by Thomas Cook collapse

No flights at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are affected by the Thomas Cook collapse, it has been confirmed.

Thousands of holidaymakers have been plunged into uncertainty after the travel firm announced it was ceasing trading with immediate effect after going into compulsory liquidation.

Nearly 22,000 people worldwide are now at risk, 9,000 of them in the UK, 150,000 Brits trapped and nearly a million customers facing travel cancellations.

Merseyside's international airport told the ECHO no flights were at risk because Thomas Cook do not operate any flights from the hub.

The Civil Aviation Authority offered advice to travellers on Monday morning, and worryingly warned them not to arrive to the airport if they had a flight this mornining.

Thomas Cook has ceased trading and the Civil Aviation Authority has been forced to step in (PA)

A statement read: "If you are due to depart from a UK airport with Thomas Cook Airlines, please do not travel to your UK airport as your flight will not be operating and you will not be able to travel.

"This repatriation is hugely complex and we are working around the clock to support passengers."

An Ellesmere Port pensioner previously told the ECHO he had been locked in a hotel during  a payment dispute with Thomas Cook.

Peter Haynes, 67, was enjoying his holiday with his partner at Les Orangers, in Tunisia, until he claimed hotel staff imprisoned him.

On Saturday September 21, at about 10.45 pm, Mr Haynes says the gates were closed and guards were stood next to it, not letting people out.

Speaking at the time of the incident, Mr Haynes said: "They've locked us in and they've locked all the gates.

"There are people who we have met in here who have been receiving bills of up to £3,000 and they're being told to pay them or else they won't be able to leave.

Mr Haynes said he is due to leave the hotel on Friday, September 27.
