Flights abroad that are cheaper than a return Scotrail train ticket from Edinburgh to Glasgow

Scotrail has announced their new flexible ticket from Edinburgh to Glasgow and it's safe to say people aren't best pleased with the cost.

The 'Anytime Return' ticket allows customers to travel to either city and and have the flexibility to return within a month.

However, the railway service received backlash on Twitter after revealing that the ticket costs £30 and £18.40 off peak.

An Anytime Day Return ticket-where you have to return on the same day- costs £26.60.

Outraged Twitter users quickly started sharing where else they can go with the same price as the new ticket and so out of curiosity, Edinburgh Live decided to look at how far we could go for cheaper.

At the time of writing, on September 6 you can fly from Edinburgh Airport to Toulouse in France for £20 - but that isn't including luggage.

Bear in mind that France does have strict restrictions for any Brits travelling over at the time of writing, and Glasgow does not.

Croatia, however, is on our green list and sun seeking Scots can jet off from Edinburgh to Zadar on Wednesday September 22 to October 6 for just £18, on Ryanair.

But when we looked at what we can do via train, an Anytime Return from Edinburgh to Aberdeen would set us back £72.10.

If you are a massive food lover and dream of pasta then you'll be pleased to know that a return from Edinburgh Airport to Bologna, jetting off on November 5 for two weeks will only cost a mere £22 with Ryanair- at the time of writing.

This is cheaper than a sirloin steak at The Ivy on the Square in Edinburgh.

And for the party goers, £26 will take you straight from Edinburgh to Ibiza, according to Skyskanner.

But of course, with air travel, luggage, taxis and accommodation also have to be considered when totalling up the prices.

At least the train stations in Scotland's major cities are slap bang in the centre and walking distance to hotels and eateries.
