Flight Incident Raises Safety Concerns

Alaska Airlines Boeing's 737 incident.

Recently, a concerning incident occurred on a flight involving a Boeing 787 aircraft, resulting in injuries to a flight attendant and 50 passengers. The preliminary investigation suggests that the incident may have been caused by the inadvertent activation of a switch on one of the electrically powered pilot seats, causing the seat to move forward and interfere with the controls of the plane.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the flight attendant's action led to a sudden drop in the aircraft, contradicting initial reports from passengers who mentioned experiencing a loss of control and dark cockpit displays. The specific switch in question is located on the backside of the seats near the headrest and is designed to facilitate pilot access without obstructing the control column.

The layout of the 787 cockpit reveals that the control column, or yoke, is positioned in front of the seats, between the pilots' legs. Pushing the control column forward results in the aircraft's nose pointing downward, highlighting the potential consequences of inadvertently moving the pilot seat too far forward.

Investigators are focusing on analyzing data from the flight data recorder, which captures various parameters including the position of the control column. This data will help determine if the movement of the seat aligns with the operation of the powered seats. Additionally, insights from the cockpit voice recorder, equipped with sensitive microphones, may provide audio evidence of any disturbances or commands issued during the incident.

While the investigation is ongoing, Boeing is reportedly preparing to issue a memo to airlines operating the 787, emphasizing the importance of caution around the specific switch involved in the incident. The emerging details suggest that the incident may have been a result of an unintentional error rather than a systemic issue with the aircraft.

As the investigation progresses, the aviation industry will closely monitor the findings to enhance safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role of thorough training and vigilance in ensuring the safety of flight operations.
