Flight bans for people who fart, burp or talk too loudly, say British public

Encountering inconsiderate passengers while travelling can make a flight a nightmare, and research shows the British public wants to ban annoying flyers - particularly those who burp, fart, or talk too loudly.

Air rage: What can airlines do about unruly passengers?

With more than 284 million passengers arriving and departing from UK airport terminals annually, it’s no surprise many bring annoying habits on board an aircraft - which quickly get on the last nerve of other passengers.

Now research carried out by Florida4Less , shows one in ten passengers would support flight bans for those who are inconsiderate with their bodily functions as well as loud talkers.

A poll also shows passengers dislike people with tickly coughs, and fellow passengers who move their chair.

Also included in the poll of the top ten most annoying things to do on a flight, is snoring, eating loudly and kissing.

Elsewhere, three in four people think being drunk on a flight should result in a flight ban, with drunkenness  being the most annoying habit of airline passengers - with moving the seats back and talking too loudly coming second and third.

The most annoying flight behaviours are:

  1. Drunkenness - 75%
  2. Fidgeting or moving the seat back - 60%
  3. Talking too loudly - 57.2%
  4. Breaking wind or burping - 57%
  5. Eating loudly or messily - 45%
  6. Sneezing or coughing - 37%
  7. Sleeping or snoring - 30%
  8. Taking socks or shoes off - 27%
  9. Kissing or cuddling - 25%
  10. Personal grooming - 23%

The research shows men and are more likely to be irritated by habits such as farting, burping, drunkenness, kissing, and snoring, while women are frustrated by poor flight etiquette.

However, the research also reveals that men are more likely to want to see unruly passengers banned from flying, especially for offences such as being drunk, farting and talking too loudly.

Commenting on the findings, Florida4Less director Martin Berens, said: “For many holiday-makers, the flight itself is a special part of their getaway, so it’s no surprise to see that Brits have strong views on how to behave on-board.

“The research also threw up some interesting regional trends. For example, Londoners are more likely to find personal grooming on-board the most annoying, while kissing or cuddling will most irritate those from the North East.

“We also found that northerners are more likely to be angered by coughing and sneezing than people from the south.”
