Flight attendants share best way for passengers to get upgraded to first class

The summer holidays are in full swing as UK jet-setters desperately try to escape for a luxury break away.

Trying to book a get-away this year has been more stressful than ever as passengers need to follow the additional rules introduced by the government's travel traffic light system.

While UK holidaymakers will be relieved just to get on a plane this year, it will make it even more enjoyable if you managed to bag yourself a free upgrade to first class so you can really enjoy your travel in style.

While there is no fool-proof way to enjoy a first class upgrade, a team of flight attendants has revealed to WhoWhatWear some top tips about how the outfit you wear could be key to getting that complimentary upgrade.

Although people may be tempted to dress in comfortable clothing for their journey, this cabin crew suggest dressing smartly can increase your chances of getting bumped up to first class.

A steward explained: "For an upgrade, it's all about looking the part.

"Smart but understated. You should look like you travel often. But don't be dripping in designer clothing. It helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren't dressed suitably."

A member of the cabin crew explained making an effort with your outfit helps your chances to get an upgrade since the cabin crew also have a dress code to adhere to.

An attendant said: "When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow.

"No jeans or trainers - so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn."

However the stewards also said that once you have received your upgrade, it's perfectly acceptable to change into more comfortable clothes for your journey.

A flight attendant said: "I always carry trackies on long-haul, and it is acceptable for us to change on board."
