Flight attendant says not to wear 2 types of trousers if you want a free upgrade

Passengers should avoid wearing certain items of clothing if they want to get their seats upgraded, a flight attendant has claimed.

Former flight attendant Celina Bedding has said customers are best to stay away from casual items of clothing if they want to get better seats on a plane.

When members of an airline crew are deciding whether to upgrade someone, "they will look for people who they understand won't disturb the other passengers that actually paid for those expensive seats", she told The Daily Express.

Dressing very casual or relaxed can sometimes give flight attendants the wrong impression, so it is always best to avoid doing so if you're on the make.

Crew members are more likely to move those passengers who "dress smarter" up to the first class section if there are seats available, Celina said.

The best outfit to go for is a fairly simply, comfortable one, she claimed.

Passengers may want to opt for a blazer and jeans, or a casual "work or business attire," Celina explained.

During the summer months when going on holidays abroad, however, it may be more difficult to wear formal clothing.

The flight attendant recommended wearing "long dresses" for women, but avoid items of clothing such as open-toed shoes or sandals and flip-flops in the summer.

She also urged travellers to "never wear sweatpants, and... leggings!"

Travel experts at ForbesAdvisor have previously backed this up and explained that "while dressing in your finest clothes is no guarantee for an upgrade, a smart outfit will certainly enhance your chances of being chosen".

First-class passengers often dress smart and "airlines will want to ensure anyone they bump to first class looks the part".

Celina also shared other tips to increase the chances to get moved to first class including "always being nice to the crew" and "arrive early for check-in".

"You probably hear that a lot, but it actually may benefit you more than you think.

"If the economy class is full and there are free seats in the business or even first class, they may upgrade you in that case," she explained.

A Ryanair crew member recently spoke to The Mirror about what they would recommend ordering from the food trolley.

One piece of advice they offered for those perusing the snack menu is to go for the hot drinks.

"The coffee and hot chocolate are actually quite good, particularly the coffee," they said.

"The coffee is proper filter stuff. I'd drink it."

One item that they pass on however, is the Twix.

"Honestly, the price of a bar of chocolate onboard," they continued. "It's £2.25 for a Twix. I wouldn't go for that. I would bring my own with me."
