Fletcher Magee sets record for missed threes in nightmarish loss to Kentucky

Two days after cementing his status as the most prolific three-point shooter in the history of Division I basketball, Wofford sharpshooter Fletcher Magee had the worst game of his career at the worst possible time.

Facing a Kentucky Wildcats team without star P.J. Washington, the Wofford Terriers put themselves in a position to pull off the upset and advance to the Sweet 16, but Magee’s struggles from beyond the arc ultimately cost Wofford.

Magee, who has hit a record 509 threes in his career and came into the game averaging 4.6 made threes per game this season, shot 0-for-12 from long range against the Wildcats, setting a new record in the process. Magee finished the game with eight points on 17 attempts.

A tip-in from Keve Aluma cut Wofford’s deficit to two points with 40 seconds remaining in the game, but Aluma was called for a very controversial shooting foul on the other end. Reid Travis hit both free throws to extend the Kentucky lead to four, and Magee missed one last desperation three.

Kentucky deserves credit for playing exceptional defense on Magee throughout the game, but Magee’s woeful shooting night under pressure was one of the most crushing storylines of the tournament so far.
