Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson named an unchanged side for today's game at Fleetwood following the 2-1 win over Doncaster - but had to settle for a point in their first match of 2020.
After the close opening stages it was Joey Barton's Fleetwood who took the lead.
Charlie Wyke was adjudged to have fouled Josh Morris - many felt harshly - in the box, and Ched Evans stuck away the resulting penalty.
Lynden Gooch could have levelled or Sunderland soon after but his shot after good work from Denver Hume went over.
The Black Cats pressed hard in the second period, with Wyke hitting the post and Luke O'Nien missing a glorious chance.
But they had to wait until the 85th minute for their leveller when sub Duncan Watmore was fouled in the box and Chris Maguire smashed home from 12 yards.
