Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton given touchline ban after sending off against Bristol Rovers

Joey Barton has been given a touchline ban after being sent to the stands against Bristol Rovers on Sunday.

The Fleetwood Town boss was incensed that his side had a goal disallowed for offside when the linesman judged that Paddy Madden had interfered with play following Ched Evans' shot.

After initially being booked for the incident, Barton's protests continued and he was sent off, with the game against Rovers going on to finish goalless.

Barton admitted to the FA that his language towards an official was "abusive and/or insulting and/or improper and/or implied bias".

He will now be given the standard penalty for the offence and not be allowed on the touchline for his side's New Year's Day clash with Sunderland.

It was the second time in three games that Barton had been sent to the stands against Rovers, previously seeing red during last season's clash at the Mem following a red card for Evans.

Speaking after Sunday's game, Barton was incensed that the goal was disallowed.

"The assistant said to us, when we were on the touchline, 'I've made a mistake, I thought Madden touched the ball and he hasn't'," Barton said.

"I don't even know what that means, because if he hasn't it's a goal. Paddy is in an offside position but doesn't touch the ball.

"If they've got it wrong, they're humans. It won't be anything sinister, it'll just be an error. That's sometimes how it goes and if they don't have the technology to help them, it's tough refereeing.

"But then if they make a decision they shouldn't be going back and forth because their bench are running past our bench. It was just chaotic because the officials lost control of the game.

"If you speak to the fourth official, he didn't have a Scooby Doo what was going on. If you speak to the linesman, he said multiple things and the ref, whose job is to make a decision, makes his decision, which is no goal.

"As frustrating as that is, the referee, from what I gather, what he's said he's disallowed it for and what's transpired are two totally different things.

"If the referee disallows it they've got to be absolutely sure what they've disallowed it for. You could see from the confusion with all the players; all their coaching staff are steaming in trying to influence the fourth official, it just became a mess because the officials never dealt with it properly."
