Joey Barton charged with assault after Fleetwood manager involved in tunnel incident at Barnsley

Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has been charged with actual bodily harm after an incident at Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium in April.

Barton has been bailed until 9 October when he will appear at Barnsley Magistrates Court charged with a section 4 assault.

The incident occurred in the tunnel at around 5pm on Saturday 13 April following a League One match between the two clubs.

Police said a man was left with facial injuries. In the days that followed, Barton issued a statement which “emphatically denied” accusations he punched Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel.

Barton is expected to take charge of Fleetwood’s pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening against Port Vale.
