Fleadh Cheoil a roaring success as over 700,000 attend week-long festival in Drogheda, Co Louth

The Fleadh Cheoil was a roaring success with almost three quarters of a million people descending on Co Louth for the festival.

As Drogheda waves goodbye to the musical masterclass, organisers say there was more than 700,000 in attendance for the week long celebration of Irish language, song, dance and culture.

Visitors enjoyed a wealth of music from the likes of Damien Dempsey, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Zoe Conway, Nathan Carter and the Hothouse Flowers, as well as street performers throughout the week.

Drogheda's enthusiasm and can-do attitude has never been more evident than in the last week, as the people opened it’s town yet again to a record number of visitors, giving them a ‘céad míle fáilte’ to remember.

Dr. Labhrás Ó Murchú, Ardstiúrthóir of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann said: “The Fleadh Cheoil in Drogheda has been a unique example of a practical partnership between Comhaltas and the Local Authority.

“It has delivered a model structure embracing over 700,000 participants and generating in the region of €40 million for the local economy.

"There are many worthwhile lessons to be learnt from this in the present Brexit Climate.”

Over 180 competitions took place at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019, with more than 7,000 people from all over the world competing for titles at an All-Ireland level.

Results of all competitions can be found here.
