Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge lands exclusive £50m deal to make Amazon shows

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is set to make exclusive shows for Amazon Prime Video after singing a £50million deal with the giant.

The mega deal comes straight off the back of her success at the Emmys which saw the 34-year-old bag three gongs at the award show on Sunday.

Phoebe has been contracted for three years to develop exclusive content for Amazon, pocketing more than £16million every year until 2022.

The deal will see her content premiere on the streaming service - which is the US distributor of Fleabag - in more than 200 countries and territories.

Described as “the most sought-after woman in the industry right now”, Phoebe has become an international icon for Fleabag, which she based on her one-woman comedy show.

The London-born star said: “I'm insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon. Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of.

"It really feels like home. I can't wait to get going."

Phoebe graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before starting her career in 2009 with an appearance in the play Roaring Trade.

She then moved into TV roles in comedy series The Cafe and crime drama Broadchurch, as well as parts in films including Albert Nobbs and The Iron Lady.

First introduced as a one-woman show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013, Fleabag was established as an angry and confused young woman struggling to navigate life in London.

The production first caught the attention of the BBC after it won the Fringe First Award.

The show was then commissioned for a six-part series for BBC Three.

The television adaptation hit screens in 2016 to critical acclaim, and soon found itself with a wider audience on BBC Two.

The show was then picked up by Amazon who handled its US distribution.

Phoebe’s success doesn’t end there.

She has been drafted in to the new James Bond production team in an effort to make the female characters more believable, and is also behind BBC1’s Killing Eve, whose star Jodie Comer bagged the Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy.
