Flats plan for former Derby pub gets the green light

A Derby pub which closed its doors last year will be turned into apartments after plans to convert the property were given the go-ahead.

Earlier this year, proposals were submitted to Derby City Council to turn the former George Cross pub, on the corner of Boyer Street and Warner Street, into a total of 10 apartments. Now, the authority has given the plans the green light.

The project involves the creation of one studio flat, three one-bedroom flats and one two-bed duplex flat on the ground floor of the property.

A studio flat and three one-bedroom flats will be created on the first floor and a one-bedroom flat on the second floor.

The whole development will be served by seven parking spaces.

The pub, which has a large beer garden to the rear, was formerly known as The Buxton Hotel, before changing its name to The George Cross 20 years ago. At one point, the pub was owned by Punch Taverns.

The property was put up for sale last year by agents James A Baker, with a guide price of £250,000.

It was marketed as a pub, but at the time, the firm said that the building could be suitable for a range of uses.

Granting permission, city council planners said: “The proposed change of use of a former public house to residential use would bring this vacant building back into use and would provide additional housing in an area with existing large numbers of flats, thereby being in keeping with the surrounding pattern of development.”
