Flats plan blocked over fears it would harm area

Plans for new apartments in Tranmere have been thrown out over fears they would harm the character of the nearby area.

The outline application, by James O’Loughlin, which would have seen 15 flats built on Church Road in the Wirral town, was rejected as the council said the building would have a “detrimental impact on amenity and the character of the area”.

The design and access statement attached to the plan said the site is now vacant and was last used as a window manufacturing facility.

The statement added that the buildings which used to occupy the Tranmere site have since been demolished.

The 15 apartments would have been built over three floors, with a flat roof aimed at reducing the height of the block and its impact on the properties to the rear according to the document.

Mr O’Loughlin’s statement added: “The apartments will be marketed toward young people who would be less likely to own a car and cycle storage is proposed to encourage sustainable forms of transport.”

Bus stops are also located near to the site.

Therefore, the applicant thought specific car parking spaces for residents were not needed.

The statement added: “We believe that parking would not be required as the site is a sustainable location on the edge of a town centre.”
