Flats evacuated as firefighters battle dramatic blaze

Residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Runcorn

The emergency services were called out to the flats in Plantation Close in the Castlefield area of the town earlier this evening following reports of a fire. Local reports suggested the residents were evacuated and that nobody was hurt.

The fire is thought to have started in a stairwell.  A resident said a couch and some boxes had been set on fire.  Photographs showed dramatic scenes as firefighters poured into the building.

ECHO reporter Oliver Clay, who was at the scene reported a large amount of smoke coming from the block of flats.  He was told by police at the scene that 'Everyone’s fine.'

The fire was put out at around 10pm.  Police, fire and ambulance all attended.
