Flats evacuated after man threatens firefighters and barricades himself inside home

A man threatened firefighters and then barricaded himself inside a flat during a standoff with police in central London.

The London Fire Brigade were first called to several reports of a blaze at an apartment block in Farringdon this afternoon.

Six fire engines were sent at first but firefighters claim they were threatened by the resident upon arrival and say it is now a "police-led incident".

The stand-off is ongoing this evening as police attempt to resolve it peacefully.

It's not known how many homes nearby have been evacuated.

A Met Police statement said: "Police were called at 15:11hrs on Tuesday, 11 August to reports of a disturbance and possible fire at a residential address on the Peabody Estate on Farringdon Road, EC1.

“The London Fire Brigade attended and were threatened by the occupant.

“Officers attended the address and the man barricaded himself inside.

“Officers are attempting to engage with the man.

“A number of neighbouring flats have been evacuated as a precaution.

“Emergency services remain at the scene.”

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Farringdon Lane, EC1.

"An investigation there was no fire but an occupant did make threats and barricaded himself inside.

"Police officers are attempting to engage with the man.

"A number of neighbouring flats have been evacuated as a precaution.

"The Brigade was called at 3.07pm."
