Flat residents furious over 'rat-infested' block after council fails to empty bins

The landlord of an apartment block in Sale says residents lives are being disrupted by the council failing to empty bins which has led to an 'environmental hazard.'

Landlord Tim Kilroe, Director of Bethell Property Services, who own the Bacara Court apartment block located on Charlton Drive, Sale says there is 'an ongoing environmental situation at an apartment block that we own'.

He says the council has been failing to empty bins on a regular basis which has led to disruption to the resident’s livelihoods and is a general environmental hazard. "We have made attempts to rectify the situation with the Trafford’s refuge department who have failed to respond, as they refuse to send a representative to carry out a site assessment, " he said.

"Even worse now there have been complaints that the area has become rat-infested and will become a bigger health risk if left to continue." Adding: "This situation has been going on for four years."

At this point, Mr Kilroe says residents have been left to empty the bins themselves. He says he has been trying to purchase additional bins for the last 12 months but cannot get the council to deliver them.

He says: "All the apartment block residents at Bacara Court pay their council taxes and have the right to get their bins emptied. They should not be subject to this continued disgraceful poor level of service from Trafford MBC."

Residents living in the flats say things have been getting worse. One person who lives in the flats said: "The bins have still not been emptied and it has become a major issue. Some of the residents are being resourceful taking their rubbish to the tip but others are just leaving their rubbish in the bin shed on the floor.

"This alone can cause multiple issues such as pests, an issue none of us want. I have tried to contact the council but they have advised this is an issue that needs to be resolved by yourselves not us."

Another complained: "[We] have been away for a couple of weeks and returned over the weekend, since coming back we've noticed that the bin shed is in a bit of a state. The general waste bins are both full, and excess bin bags have just been piled up on the floor. The recycling bin is also overflowing which makes it seem as though they haven't been emptied since we've been away.

"We are concerned that they won't be emptied next time as it will be refused on the grounds of how messy it is, and we're also worried about vermin being attracted to the area. Also we will now have to take our rubbish to the tip in Stretford due to lack of space."

A spokesperson for the One Trafford Partnership said: “We are aware of missed bin collections at Bacara Court Apartments and are liaising with the management company to get them emptied on Thursday August, 18. Bins were recently missed due to blocked access and bins being damaged, making collections a health and safety issue.

“The management company has requested that the damaged bins be replaced, and we are arranging for new bins to be delivered by next week. We acknowledge that we should have responded more quickly to this request, and apologise for the delay in delivering the new bins. Emptying the bins in a timely manner is important to us and our waste team will monitor collections at Bacara Court, to ensure they are emptied as they should be moving forward. “
