Flat ravaged by fire was once the home of famous American rock star and friends

A large first floor flat badly damaged by a devastating fire was once lived in by rock star Courtney Love.

The apartment was devastated by a blaze that ripped through the building on June 7, on Devonshire Road in Toxteth, near Princes Park.

And it has now emerged that Love lived at the address in 1982, along with a crowd of other world famous musicians.

Also resident in the flat was Julian Cope, from The Teardrop Explodes, Pete De Freitas from Echo and the Bunnymen, Peter Burns from Dead or Alive and Paul Simpson from the Wild Swans.

Love, who aside from her marriage to Kurt Cobain formed the successful rock band Hole, described her time at the Devonshire Road flat as "probably the nicest pre money/fame spots I ever lived in."

The American stayed at the flat for about six months before she moved out to "give Simpson and De Freitas a break from the girls," observers recalled, and she continued to live elsewhere in Toxteth.

Later in 1982, Love returned to the USA.

She came to Merseyside after travelling with her friend Robin and was invited by Cope to stay on Devonshire Road, described as "an epicentre for Liverpool's thriving 1980s music scene," after hooking up with The Teardrop Explodes band at a gig in London and jumping on their tour bus home.

Friends said how Courtney often told of "learning to be a rock and roll star in Liverpool" and last year, she namechecked the city when accepting the NME Icon Award, and told the audience: "I first picked up a New Musical Express, in like, Liverpool."

She often describes Echo and the Bunnymen as the biggest band of all time.

Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam has written about Love's time in Liverpool in his back Searching for Love, still available online and in book shops.

In the early hours of June 7, the fire broke out on the first floor flat when a friend of resident Dave Griffiths started a fire in a bedroom grate which quickly spiraled out of control and engulfed the room.

The friend tried to put out the flames and suffered serious burns to his arms and hands and was taken to hospital for treatment

But the blaze spread and caused a massive amount of fire and smoke damage to the property.

Ms Griffiths was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and spent a number of hours "coughing up horrible black stuff" following the blaze, which broke out at around 1am.

The 64-year-old added how the sounding of the working smoke alarms had potentially saved his life, and that of other people living in the upper flats.

Photographs showed how one bedroom, where the blaze started, had been completely destroyed, and adjoining rooms seriously smoke damaged.

Pictures taken by the ECHO showed the extent of the devastation left behind with a heap of burnt, completely blackened, and destroyed furniture and personal belongings.

In the bedroom where the fire started, an expensive keyboard and music amplifier was wrecked, while in other rooms, the living room, nearby bedrooms, and the kitchen, were severely smoke damaged with thick black soot covering the walls.

The damage is estimated to run into many tens of thousands of pounds for the landlords who own the property.
