Flat owners demand urgent action from Government to end cladding scandal

Thousands of frustrated flat owners voiced their anger at the cladding scandal today.

Protesters across the UK demanded urgent action from the Government and home developers to save them from ruin.

Tens of thousands of leaseholders face bills averaging £50,000 to repair fire safety defects uncovered after the 2017 Grenfell Tower inferno in West London, which killed 72 – and their flats are unsellable until the issues are fixed.

Protests targeted the sales offices of major developers.

Around 200 turned out in Manchester, where residents at developer Lendlease’s Green Quarter complex face bills of up to £30,000 each.

Sally Rennison, 28, who bought her two-bed flat for £207,000 in 2017, said: “I want children but I don’t want to raise them in the apartment as it is.”

There were also demos in London’s Canary Wharf, Birmingham, Cardiff, Sheffield, Ipswich, Brighton and Stevenage.

The Government has set up a £5billion building safety fund – but MPs fear the total bill could hit £15billion with burden falling on owners.

The Home Builders Federation said: “The industry is committed to playing its part in finding solutions.”

Lendlease said: “We helped find a solution so residents of two buildings at Green Quarter did not need to pay for replacement of cladding.”
