Flash floods cause chaos for Glasgow and Edinburgh drivers after heavy downpour

Flash floods have hit Scotland's two largest cities causing chaos for drivers.

Dramatic pictures tonight from Edinburgh and Glasgow show cars struggling to get through deep water after heavy rainfall.

The Central Belt has basked in a week-long heatwave until the rain lashed down today, our sister sites Glasgow Live and Edinburgh Live report.

A car became submerged under the floods at the A70 Meggetgate bridge due to a burst water pipe.

An image shows a car and taxi submerged in water, with the flood bringing delays and travel chaos in the Slateford and Chesser area of Edinburgh.

In Glasgow, people have taken to social media urging drivers to avoid Bisland Drive, Maryhill Road and Leyden Street.

Residents have also reported cars becoming stuck in deep water under the railway bridge at Summerston.

Police confirmed they were called out to the area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of flooding at Maryhill Road and officers are in attendance to assist."

The Met Office say we can expect 'unsettled' weather across the weekend.

The forecast for tomorrow reads: “A bright morning with sunny spells and, mainly across the south and a few showers. The showers develop more widely in the afternoon and may be occasionally heavy.

“The weather will be unsettled through the weekend and Monday with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and perhaps thundery at times. Still feeling warm in any sunshine with mainly light winds.”
