Flash flooding closes Queens Drive as torrential rain batters Liverpool

Heavy rain sparked hazardous driving conditions in Liverpool this morning - with flooding completely closing a main road into the city today.

Dramatic pictures show an abandoned car on waterlogged Queens Drive , which travel monitors INRIX say is blocked in both directions "due to flooding from North Mossley Hill Road to Dovedale Road".

Liverpool Lib Dem leader Richard Kemp also took to Twitter to warn people to avoid the road on a day when the Met Office predict we are in for a month of rain .

Cllr Kemp said: "SOUTH LIVERPOOL WARNING. Queens Drive flooded at railway bridge near Liverpool College. All nearby roads suffering heavy traffic. Try and avoid."

But Queens Drive was not the only flood-hit road today.

Bad weather has seen queueing traffic on the M53 Northbound from J9 A5032 Station Road (Ellesmere Port) to J6 (Hooton).

And earlier today there was surface water on the M57 from A59 (Switch Island) to J3 B5198 (Stockbridge Village).

Traffic was also heavier than normal on the M62 Westbound from J5 A5080 Roby Road ( Huyton ) to J4 A5080  Bowring Park  Road (The Rocket).

The Met Office have warned England and Wales can expect 30mm to 50mm of rain in a short time today, with 70mm in isolated spots.

Forecaster Mark Wilson said: "It's very likely there will be issues with surface water causing flooding."

In Liverpool, the Met Office warned there could be storms.
