Flooding has caused major disruption to rail services in Wigan.

Services were halted between Wigan Wallgate and Southport due to flooding at Parbold and New Lane.

Trains travelling between Alderley Edge and Southport and Stalybridge and Southport have also been affected.

Photographs shared by Northern show rail tracks submerged in rain water.

There were further concerns about water cascading down embankment and onto lines between Wigan and Kirkby.

Flooding at New Lane (Northern)

Disruption on the line between Wigan and Kirkby is expected until 5.30pm.

Services between Wigan Wallgate and Southport have now reopened, according to Northern.

Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed by up to 10 minutes.

Flash flooding has hit parts of Greater Manchester following a torrential downpour.

Areas of Tottington and Walshaw are among the areas affected after heavy rainfall earlier this afternoon.

Footage shared on social media shows a large stream of water gushing down Stormer Hill in Tottington.

Nearby streets, including Bury Road and Turton Road, were also left under several inches of water.
