'Flash' blast at takeaway shop leaves pair with serious burns

The "flash" explosion happened at Yummy Fish inside the Parabanks Shopping Centre at Salisbury.

Two people have been rushed to hospital with serious burns from an explosion involving a compressor at a fish and chip shop in Adelaide's north.

The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) said a contractor suffered "full body burns" in the incident at Yummy Fish, at the Parabanks Shopping Centre.

The centre was temporarily evacuated after a witness raised the alarm about 8:50am.

A woman who witnessed the incident said the flame was "huge — it took up half of their place".

"It was a bit scary … it kept burning for a little bit so that's why everybody pretty much ran and left," she said.

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated and the MFS described it as a "flash event" that may have involved gas.

MFS senior officer David Potter said the contractor and the owner of the shop were treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

"We attended and, upon investigation, found there was an explosion … two persons had been impacted by that explosion and were suffering significant burns," he said.

"There were contractors on site, they were working on a compressor, the actual cause of ignition is yet to be determined.

"[A] contractor suffered full body burns to his chest and face.

"The owner of the shop suffered burns to the legs."

A relative of the business owner said the contractor was fixing the fridge when the incident occurred.

The MFS said SafeWork SA and police were also investigating.
