Flames engulf van on Giffnock street as emergency services called to the scene

Fire crews are currently tackling a fierce blaze which has taken hold of a stricken van in East Renfrewshire.

Emergency services have been called to the scene on Fenwick Road in Giffnock after the vehicle caught fire shortly after 1.30pm on Friday.

A video sent to the Daily Record by a passerby shows the white Transit van with flames shooting out from the front end.

The vehicle, which appears to be pulling a trailer, has been driven onto the pavement however traffic was still passing close by at the time the footage was taken.

Thick plumes of black smoke were also filmed billowing into the sky.

It is not known if anyone has been injured.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they are in attendance with one engine at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Police were made aware of a van on fire on Fenwick Road, Giffnock around 1.35pm on Friday, 23 April, 2021.

“Officers are currently in attendance to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
