Flames and smoke seen in Wallsend as five fire engines called to blaze

Flames and smoke could be seen shooting into the sky after a fire broke out overnight in Wallsend.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service sent five fire engines to tackle the fire near Hadrian Road, in the North Tyneside town, after a blaze broke out in an industrial yard.

Families who live nearby were advised to keep all windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

The blaze, which broke out close to Hadrian Road Metro station, was first reported at 12.35am on Sunday.

Footage captured of the fire shows the flames up close as well as smoke which could be seen around Wallsend.

It has since been confirmed that recycling materials had caught fire and the blaze is not being treated as malicious.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue said: "Five fire appliances attended the incident on Hadrian Road, Wallsend last night.

"The fire involved recycling materials and is thought to have not been suspicious."

Firefighters had left the scene by 8am on Sunday.
